Course Overview

The PADI Enriched Air (Nitrox) Diver course is the most popular PADI specialty worldwide, and for good reason. By diving with enriched air—which contains more oxygen and less nitrogen than standard air—you can safely extend your no-decompression limits. This means more time underwater, especially on repetitive dives! Many divers also report feeling less tired after diving with Nitrox. If you love staying down longer and getting back in the water sooner, this is the course for you.

What you’ll learn

This is primarily a theoretical and practical application course. You will learn the science behind gas mixtures and how to manage oxygen exposure. Key skills include:

  • Analysing Gas: How to use an oxygen analyzer to check your tank
  • Dive Computers: Setting your computer for Enriched Air Nitrox
  • Oxygen Exposure: Understanding CNS toxicity and depth limits
  • Dive Planning: Planning dives with longer bottom times
  • Marking Tanks: Proper labeling procedures for Nitrox cylinders

Course Prerequisites

  • 1
PADI Open Water Diver (or qualifying certification from another agency)
  • 2

    Minimum age: 12 years old

  • 3

Good physical health (medical questionnaire required)

  • 4

No dives required! (This course can be “Dry” or combined with dives)

Course Curriculum

Knowledge & Analysis

Goal: Learn how to analyze your air and set your computer.

PADI eLearning

Understand the advantages and disadvantages of Nitrox
Learn about partial pressure of oxygen (PO2)
Complete the final exam online or in the classroom

Practical Workshop

Hands-on session with your instructor to:
* Analyze the oxygen content in a cylinder
* Mark the tank content sticker
* Set your dive computer for the specific mix (e.g., EANx32)

Optional Dives

Goal: Put your new skills to use on the reef! (Optional but recommended)

Nitrox Dives

Enjoy two dives using Enriched Air Nitrox to extend your bottom time and explore more of the reef. Feel the difference!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Common misconception! No, Nitrox actually limits your depth compared to air due to oxygen toxicity risks at depth. Nitrox is about staying *down longer* at shallow to medium depths (e.g., 18m to 30m), not going deeper.

Most modern scuba equipment (regulators and BCDs) is compatible with standard Nitrox blends (up to 40% oxygen) right out of the box. However, your dive tank must be specifically cleaned and labeled for Nitrox service, which we provide.

If you dive Nitrox but use “Air” limits on your computer, you significantly reduce the risk of decompression sickness (the bends) because you are absorbing less nitrogen. So yes, it can be used to increase safety margins!

The PADI Enriched Air Diver course can actually be completed as a “dry” course with just theory and practical analysis workshops. However, we highly recommend doing the optional open water dives to get the full experience and practice analyzing tanks in a real-world setting.

It is very quick! The theory and practical workshop can be completed in just a few hours (half a day). If you choose to do the dives, you can complete the certification in 1 day.
