If you have a passion for the ocean and want to transform your life, becoming a scuba diving instructor is the ultimate goal. The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) rating is the core of the PADI instructor course (IDC). Unlike a Divemaster who guides certified divers, a dive instructor is a mentor who teaches people how to breathe underwater for the very first time.

What you’ll learn

Under the mentorship of a PADI Course Director, this PADI instructor course focuses on the psychology of teaching and the PADI System of Education. You will master the skills to conduct all PADI core courses as a qualified dive instructor. Key topics include:

  • Teaching Presentations: conducting academic sessions in the classroom

Theory & Standards

Deep dive into Dive Theory (Physics, Physiology, Equipment).

Understand the “Business of Diving” as a professional scuba diving instructor.

Instructor Examination (IE)

Goal: Prove your skills to an independent PADI Examiner.

The Final Step

The IE is a two-day evaluation conducted by PADI Staff (not your instructor). You will be tested on theory, standards, confined water teaching, open water teaching, and rescue skills. Pass this, and you are officially a scuba diving instructor!

The Instructor Development Course (IDC) typically takes 14 to 16 days to complete, followed by the 2-day Instructor Examination (IE). It is an intensive training program designed to prepare you for life as a dive instructor.

The Instructor Exam (IE) is designed to verify that you are ready to teach. If you have paid attention during your PADI instructor course and completed your assignments, you will be well-prepared. Your Course Director will not send you to the IE unless they are confident you will pass!

Yes, to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, you must also be an *Emergency First Response (EFR) Instructor*. Most dive centers include the EFR Instructor training as part of the IDC package, usually done in 1 or 2 days during the course.
